Despite the name, Area 51 isn't into alien shtick. Rather, this dance club on the edge of downtown's West End is Dallas' version of New York's Studio 54. It's the slammin' dance club for the beautiful twentysomething crowd. The dress code is strictly enforced -- no jeans, baseball caps or T-shirts -- and you've got to look awesome even to get in the door. But keep in mind the club doesn't really rock 'til after midnight. Patrons gyrate in a pitlike dance floor -- it's below the main level and accessible by a steep staircase. DJs spin trance, the genre- of-the-moment music, and three full bars stand ready to provide liquid refreshment. There are plenty of tables, chairs and couches for lounging and watching the spectacle, too. -- Kathryn Jones
